Reducing fuel consumption starts with the right tyres

In transport, efficiency often comes down to details that are easy to overlook. One of those details is where the trailer meets the road: the tyres.

Across its rental fleet, ICTS deliberately equips trailers with premium A-brand tyres such as Goodyear, Continental and Bridgestone. While these tyres come at a higher purchase price, this decision reflects a clear philosophy: investing in high-quality components that improve performance for the operators’ customers using the fleet.

Tyres play a crucial role in rolling resistance, which directly influences fuel composition. In a tractor-trailer combination, the trailer itself can represent up to 50% of the total rolling resistance. Choosing higher-quality tyres therefore contributes to more efficient transport operations.

In real-world conditions, even a modest improvement of around 2.5% in efficiency can already make a noticeable difference. For a truck driving approximately 100,000 kilometres per year, this may translate into fuel savings of around €1,050 annually, while reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 1.8 tonnes per vehicle.

For larger fleets, the impact quickly becomes significant. A fleet of ten tractor-trailer combinations could potentially reduce fuel costs by €10,500 per year and cut emissions by more than 18 tonnes of CO₂.

By equipping its rental trailers with premium tyres as standard, ICTS ensures that these efficiency gains are built into the fleet from the start. It is one of many technical choices within fleet management that help transport operators keep costs under control while supporting more sustainable transport operations. With the barrel of crude oil at 100 USD, it is extremely important to reduce the diesel fuel consumption as much as we can.
